Edo, city and capital of Tokyo to (metropolis) and of Japan. It is located at the head of Tokyo Bay on the Pacific coast of central Honshu.
Tokyo was originally a small fishing village in Edo. Edo became the center of Tokugawo Ieyasu's nationwide government. During the 18th century Edo topped 1 million, Edo started to grow and grow, and eventually became one of the largest cities. Tokyo continued to be the capital until it was abolished as a municipality in 1943 and merged with the "Metropolitan Prefecture" of Tokyo.

Edo was the imperial capital capital in 1868. But during the early Meiji period, the city Edo was also named "Tokei." Since many people pronounce different countries have alternative pronunciations, the alternative for this city was Tokyo, that is why it is called this today.
